Employment Blog: Employee Engagement “Could Reduce Tribunal Claims”

Thursday 09th Feb 2012

Nita Clarke, vice-president of The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has inversely linked the level of employee engagement with the number of tribunals an employer is likely to face, in an interview with website People Management.

Clarke explained: “In organisations that respect staff as an asset there is much more dialogue and transparency, and bad behaviours – whether by managers or staff – do not go unchallenged.  I think in those organisations there are less likely to be cases of unfair dismissal and the need to go to employment tribunals and so on. The legislative underpinning is very important, but it’s the culture that changes things in workplaces.”

There is certainly plenty of evidence to back this assertion up, as a more structured approach to internal communications and human resources is often the way to avoid an issue being elevated to tribunal level.

Clarke then stressed the value of such an approach in these more austere times; “Engagement is how you survive. If you look at organisations that got through the recession in 2008, it was mainly by deep engagement with the workforce.”

With tribunals often costing firms in excess of five figures through pay-outs and legal fees it is easy to see how important it is from an HR position to get employee engagement right.
